Go Out Into The World!

The Hindu Union Committee Middle School was established in 1905 and promotes the education of Dalit children, living in the city slums of North-Chennai. Providing education to the underprivileged children is the main aim of this school. The children are highly motivated to study but it is difficult for them without the support of their parents. The school provides food and educational materials for the children because of their poor living situation. They motivate the parents to send their children to the school, too. The volunteers will teach the children and support the overall development of the child. The volunteers will give lessons in English. In the morning, they will regularly practice reading and the post-lunch session is for creative activities and organizing special programs.

This project focuses on people living in relocated, resettled areas in the outskirts of Chennai due resettlement of victims of Tsunami from the coastal area. The Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board proposes to create a slum-free Chennai and as an attempt towards this, the slum communities are relocated to resettlement areas at Kannagi Nagar. There UDAVI runs a women rescue centre addressing the issue of domestic violence. UDAVI's activities are supporting childrens education, health, recreation and works with youth and women. The volunteer will work along with the community volunteers in organizing activities for children and teaching the children in the primary school. They will also assist the staff in executing activities for women.

The organization was founded in order to restore women against violence and provide justice to the victim and to restore hope and dignity to women-hood, through gender mainstreaming efforts at various levels. The organization also promotes the organic farming as a livelihood option for women. The volunteer has to assist the team in the planning, implementing and evaluation of programs​.
